Is the America the Beautiful pass worth it?
The America the Beautiful — National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass costs $80 for 12 months and covers entrance and standard amenity (day-use) fees across more than 2,000 federal recreation sites. Whether it’s worth it comes down to simple math: how many fee sites will you visit in a year?
Most national parks charge $20–$35 per vehicle to enter. Two or three visits and the pass has already paid for itself — and it also covers day-use fees at national forests, wildlife refuges, and BLM areas that most people don’t even realize charge.
The quick math
A single vehicle entrance to a big national park runs about $35 and is good for up to 7 days. If you’ll enter fee-charging federal sites three or more times in a year, the $80 pass saves you money — and the more agencies you visit (forests, refuges, BLM day-use areas), the faster it pays off.
When it’s clearly worth it
- You’ll visit two or more national parks that charge an entrance fee.
- You do a lot of day-use recreation on national forest or BLM land (trailheads, boat launches, scenic areas that post a fee).
- You’re taking a multi-park road trip in a single year.
- You want one thing in the glovebox that works across all six agencies.
When it might not be
- You only visit free sites (many national forests, refuges, and BLM areas charge nothing).
- You qualify for a free or cheaper pass — seniors, current military, people with disabilities, and 4th graders can get one for free or $20 (see below).
- You’ll only make one park visit all year.
What it does not cover
The pass covers entrance and day-use fees only. It does not cover camping, tours, shuttles, boat launches at some sites, or concessionaire fees — and at many Army Corps of Engineers lakes it’s a partial (50%) discount rather than free. Always confirm at the specific site.
Frequently asked
How much is the America the Beautiful pass?
The standard Annual Pass is $80 and is valid for 12 months from the month of purchase.
How many parks do I need to visit for the pass to pay off?
About two to three fee-charging parks. Most national park entrance fees are $20–$35 per vehicle, so 2–3 visits cover the $80 cost.
Is there a cheaper version of the pass?
Yes. Seniors (62+) pay $20/year or $80 for life; current military, people with permanent disabilities, 4th graders, and volunteers can get a pass for free.
